Who needs a License?
Driver Licenses
You need to obtain a Florida license if you live in Florida and want to drive a motor vehicle on public streets and highways. If you move to Florida and have a valid license from another state, you will need a Florida license within 30 days of becoming a resident. You are considered a resident of Florida if you:
- File a declaration of domicile
- Register to vote
- File for homestead exemption
- Reside in Florida for more than six consecutive months
In most cases, driver licenses are valid for six or eight years, expiring midnight of the birthday. A late penalty of $15.00 is assessed the day after expiration. Licenses can be renewed up to 18 months prior to expiration.
